Garages warned after employee sustains fatal burns The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned garage owners to ensure that they employ safe working practices when fixing fuel systems after a company was fined following the death of a worker.

After pleading guilty to health and safety breaches leading to the death, the firm was fined £20,000, the maximum possible, as well as costs of nearly £7,000.

To avoid injuries of this sort to workers, employers should ensure that they conduct suitable risk assessment and provide workers with adequate safety gloves and workwear.

Safety signs should also be put up around flammable materials.

Andrew Withers, HM inspector of health and safety, commented: "I hope this case encourages other employers who have to control the risks created by petrol to double check their arrangements and ensure they are adequate and sensible."

The company was in breach of Section 2 of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974, which states that it is the duty of the employer to provide arrangements for ensuring safety and the absence of risks with regard to the storage of substances.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18663602-ADNFCR
