Government targets London in health and safety drive Slips, trips and falls in the workplace cost the UK economy £811 million a year, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The HSE is taking its Shattered Lives campaign to the London this week, in a bid to increase health, safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) awareness in the capital.

London HSE director Steven Williams commented: "Slips, trips and falls can be viewed as being minor, funny accidents but the effects are not. It can lead to major injuries and a lifetime of disability or time off work - and in worst cases fatalities."

Mr Williams urges anyone who spots a hazard to report it to their employer immediately - without assuming that 'somebody else will sort it out'.

Last year in London alone 4,951 people were killed or injured in work-related accidents, costing the city almost £80 million.

The government says employers must take a number of steps to protect employees, such as carrying out risk assessments, providing suitable PPE and making sure spillages and wet floors are clearly marked with signs.
