Government targets offshore workers in H&S drive New guidance aimed at protecting the safety of British offshore workers has been published by the Offshore Industry Advisory Committee's (OIAC) Workforce Involvement Group.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) claims the new guidance is aimed at improving levels of offshore health and safety by focusing on four main areas - "control, competence, cooperation and communication".

Employers are being urged to involve workers in health, safety and PPE issues - and the HSE is encouraging "constructive" engagement, in a bid to improve workplace standards and H&S practices.

Head of the HSE's offshore division and chair of OIAC Ian Whewell commented: "I believe that the effective involvement of the workforce is essential if the UK offshore industry is to deliver the improvements in performance necessary for it to meet its target to be the safest in the world by 2010."

The government aims to reduce the number of working days lost as a result of workplace injury by 30 per cent by 2010.
