Government wants to ensure offshore oil companies are not 'complacent' Work and pensions secretary James Purnell has called on offshore oil companies to ensure they do not become complacent about health and safety issues.

Last November, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published a review of the safety improvements made by the industry since the Piper Alpha disaster.

The KP3 report included the results of a three-year study and identified a number of recommendations for further improvement.

Mr Purnell stated: "We have to ensure this work continues, which is why I have asked the HSE to carry out a review of progress on the industry's response to the issues identified by the KP3 report."

Some basic safety measures that companies should consider include the installation of safety signs and the provision of safety helmets, safety gloves and workwear for employees.

The explosion on the Piper Alpha oil rig in 1988 claimed 167 lives after a supervisor failed to complete his work and passed it on to a contractor who did not read his handover notes.
