Guidance booklet released by IOSH Guidelines for employers on the procedures surrounding a fatal accident in the workplace are to be released by The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

The booklet - entitled Learning the lessons: How to respond to deaths at work and other serious accidents - will cover the key issues to be examined following a serious accident.

Among other topics, it will explain why firms should conduct internal investigations as well as preparation and planning.

Ian Waldram, who led the working party that produced the advice, commented: "We think it's good to have some pre-planned investigation arrangements in case the worst happens and someone is killed or seriously hurt at work."

He added that a competent health and safety professional could relieve some of the hardships of the situation and increase the company's capacity to learn from the incident.

The Health and Safety Executive's website also offers advice to firms looking to improve their safety performance, including what personal protective equipment is needed for different tasks.

It recommends conducting thorough risk assessment and providing the necessary gear such as safety helmets and hi vis clothing.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18740213-ADNFCR
