HSE: Employers must provide personal protective equipment Employers have been warned by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) not to "ignore basic safety precautions", after dangerous working practices were discovered during Newcastle inspections last week.

The HSE says five employers were issued with prohibition orders, which prevent further work until safety measures and equipment have been put in place.

According to a statement released by the HSE, inspectors are concerned about a number of dangerous practices, including a lack of asbestos checks and equipment not being guarded properly.

HM inspector of health and safety Michael Brown claims inspector were "appalled" by some of the sites.

"We will not tolerate poor standards and will take appropriate enforcement action proactively as well as when an accident occurs," he said.

However, the HSE insists that a majority of contractors are upholding the law and Mr Brown said site inspectors were pleased to find a number of employers displaying "high levels of safety precautions".

The HSE will be targeting the Scottish construction sector this week, with a number of spot checks scheduled for Edinburgh.
