HSE: Risk assessments are vital

HSE: Risk assessments are vital The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has today warned employers about the importance of risk assessments following the successful prosecution of a manufacturing company, which was fined after an employees finger was slice off by an unguarded circular saw.

Employers are being urged to ensure that staff are fully trained and provided with workwear suitable for the tasks they are charged with.

HSE inspector Wayne Owen commented: "A high-speed revolving blade, that is sharp enough to slice through wood, is an obvious risk. It is for this reason that extra care must be taken to ensure that the operator is well trained and that the saw is well maintained and properly used."

Mr Owen reminded employers that a wide range of information was available from the HSE, on risk assessments and the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety boots, safety signs and spill kits.

In other news, the HSE yesterday warned employers in the construction sector to ensure that workers were protected from the risk of asbestos, adding that failure to carry out asbestos checks was wholly "unacceptable".
