HSE announces clampdown on vehicle safety The safe use of vehicles in the workplace will be a focus point for health and safety spot checks being carried out in Teesside from January 26th.

Some 65 deaths at work last year were caused by the use of transport and the HSE believes these accidents could have been avoided if dangerous procedures had not been in place.

Employers are being encouraged by the HSE to also carry out risk management procedures related to hazards in their industry, such as slips, trips, working at height or the handling of dangerous substances.

HSE inspector Laura Lyons said enforcement action would be taken if necessary, but the aim of the spot checks is educate employers so that workers can go about their day jobs safely.

"Preventing an accident occurring is much better than having to deal with the consequences, and we will be able to offer constructive, practical advice where appropriate," she said.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are expected to ensure the health and safety of their workers as far as reasonably practicable.

Firms could do this by training staff in the safe use of moving vehicles, as well as providing personal protective equipment such as safety gloves, hi vis clothing and spill kits when necessary.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18981942-ADNFCR
