HSE appoints new director in Scotland The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has appointed a new director in Scotland, it was announced yesterday.

Dr Paul Stollard, who has over 25 years of experience in the health and safety sector, will replace Stuart Campbell who retired as the HSE's Scotland director last month.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr Stollard said it was a "tremendous honour" to be offered the position - adding that he was looking forward to the challenge of improving the country's health and safety practices.

"In 2006-7 nearly 200,000 people in Scotland suffered from an illness they believed had been caused or made worse by work. Over the same period in Scotland 31 people were killed at work and over 12,000 others were injured. This lays out a very clear challenge to those with duties under health and safety law," he continued.

According to HSE statistics, work-related illnesses in Scotland are at their highest rate since 2003.
