HSE approach doesn't go far enough, says IOSH

HSE approach doesn't go far enough, says IOSH A tougher regulatory approach is required to drive up health and safety standards, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has suggested.

Richard Jones, policy and technical director at the European body, called for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to consider more radical strategies, such as introducing enforceable directors' duties.

His comments come after the HSE recently launched its Shattered Lives campaign, which includes an online resource to make companies aware of potential workplace dangers facing staff, such as slips and trips.

Such awareness campaigns might encourage companies to invest in protective equipment, such as safety boots, workwear and safety signs.

IOSH also proposed a government-funded advice service for smaller businesses and for stronger HSE goals on investigation and enforcement.

"The HSE needs to look outside the box to come up with genuinely workable solutions, calling on specific stakeholders including educators, insurers and business networks to play a much bigger part," Mr Jones said.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19066130-ADNFCR
