HSE calls for better safety provision for confined spaces The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned of the need for improved health and safety equipment and regulations for workers operating in confined spaces.

HSE has reminded employers of their legal obligation to provide proper training and appropriate personal protective equipment such as harnesses for workers, as well as the need for thorough emergency arrangements.

The warning comes after a silo maintenance company received a £30,000 fine following the death by heat exhaustion of an employee engaged in routine silo cleaning.

HSE inspector Ian Whittles said: "Often, workers are caught unawares because of the many hidden dangers. This is why it is so important to have safety systems in place. Prevention is always better than cure!"

The legal need for safety equipment and clothing in these instances is stated in the Confined Spaces Regulations of 1997, which call for "the provision of suitable equipment which is in good working order".ADNFCR-1200-ID-19207737-ADNFCR
