HSE campaigns against health and safety myths

HSE campaigns against health and safety myths The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced a new campaign aimed at combating "health and safety myths".

Fourteen councils in the south-east will join the HSE in its Sign up to Sensible Risk campaign, which the executive claims will "combat the growing number of myths that are undermining important health and safety legislation".

The councils will be advised on a number of points, including risk management and personal protective equipment (PPE) issues.

HSE regional director for the south-east Phil Scott claims the public should forget the "myths" and focus on the importance of health and safety in the workplace.

"Turn your minds from the saloon bar stories about supposedly banning conkers or putting up Christmas decorations and look at the stark reality: too many people have lost their lives or been injured," he said.

Kent county council chief executive Peter Gilroy claims health and safety stories have "gone mad" and undermine the work done by local authorities.

According to the government there are a number of factors that contribute to good risk management by employers, such as providing workers with the correct PPE and making them aware of their own responsibilities.

The HSE recently launched a "myth of the month" cartoon, exploring the most common health and safety misconceptions.
