HSE concerned over safety of offshore oil companies The Health and Safety Executive has expressed concern with inadequate focus on safety in the offshore oil industry.

Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSE, said that the failure to reduce the discharges of hydrocarbon, coupled with the rise in major injuries indicated that basic safety was not being followed.

She stated: “Although there are instances where improvements have been sustained, the control of potential major incident risks seems to have taken a back seat.”

Ms Hackitt added that it is vital that basic systems of safety be upheld if a disaster similar to one that occurred 20 years ago was to be avoided.

Recent figures showed that releases of hydrocarbon, which are often indicators of an impending accident, are still very high.

Last year, 517 dangerous cases were reported, 40 per cent of which were hydrocarbon releases.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, companies are required to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees in the workplace.

This may involve providing personal protective equipment such as safety boots, hi vis clothing or spill kits.
