HSE develops crane register regulations

HSE develops crane register regulations The Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) drive to ensure construction sites only use the correct safety workwear and equipment took a step forward yesterday (November 25th).

The organisation agreed on detailed recommendations for a statutorily-based tower crane register after three months of public consultation.

Contractors, trade unions and other industry stakeholders were among the 100 parties to respond to the discussion and give their opinion on the proposed regulations, which will now come into operation in April next year.

Cranes already erected at that point must be registered within 28 days, while others require notification of the relevant information within a fortnight of examination.

Registrations can be carried out electronically on the HSE website and construction companies will be asked to record where the crane is, who owns it, identification details, the date of examination and whether any defects exist.

"There have been a number of high-profile and tragic failures of tower cranes in recent years and there is widespread interest in finding ways to improve safety," explained HSE chief inspector of construction Philip White.

Meanwhile, the HSE is helping Medway Council to provide health and safety advice and support to businesses in the area.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19482196-ADNFCR
