HSE emphasises dangers of quarry work The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning to employers of quarry workers of the dangers in the industry.

It reiterated the fact that bosses have a duty of care to labourers and that the sector is a particularly hazardous one.

The body said that all firms have a responsibility to identify the risks on a site and to ensure that they are properly controlled.

Simon Edwards, HSE inspector, commented: "Although much has been done to improved health and safety standards in the quarry industry, there is no room for complacency."

He added that quarry workers are twice as likely to be killed at work than staff in construction and 13 times more at risk than those in manufacturing.

Guidelines on the HSE website provide employers with information on personal protective equipment such as safety helmets and safety gloves.

It states that all work gear must be well maintained and should fit properly.
