HSE head attacks cynics

HSE head attacks cynics The chair of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has struck back at cynics who focus on "elf and safety" and "nonsense" stories.

Judith Hackitt told the National Safety Symposium that the HSE was not responsible for protecting employees in the workplace, it was the job of the individual company, reports the Press Association.

She stated that critics who concentrate on the misuse of legislation and regulations for banning conkers or playground games miss the point of the laws.

Ms Hackitt added that performing risk assessments and helping small businesses to react properly to incidents and adhere to "legislative requirements" were far more important.

The HSE head said: "Health and safety does not stop anyone from doing their job - it actually enables them to do it more safely and efficiently."

Companies looking to improve their safety performance should ensure that they provide properly fitting personal protective equipment such as hi vis clothing and workwear.

In related news, Ray Hurst, president of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, recently wrote to the Daily Mail about the necessity to focus on important safety issues and not getting trapped in considerations of unnecessary measures.
