HSE inspector issues asbestos warning

HSE inspector issues asbestos warning Asbestos may be present in any premises built before the year 2000 in a variety of forms, a health and safety expert has warned.

Matthew Lee, an investigating inspector of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), observed that when asbestos is disturbed, damaged or left in poor condition, it can give rise to a risk of exposure to employees in the vicinity.

Mr Lee therefore stressed the need for duty holders to have effective arrangements for detecting asbestos and managing the risk it may present.

"Facilities managers are key to ensuring that these effective systems are in place to protect workers and to ensure that duty holders meet their legal responsibilities," he commented.

In the late 19th century, asbestos became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders due to its sound absorption, average tensile strength, as well as its resistance to heat, electrical and chemical damage.

In order to remove asbestos safely, appropriate workwear must be worn.ADNFCR-1200-ID-800070421-ADNFCR
