HSE issues PPE warning Employers across the UK are being urged to ensure that workers are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing and that all risks are properly controlled.

Today's warning from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) comes after a worker in Gateshead was left blind in one eye, after a grinding disc shattered the visor he was wearing at the time.

Speaking earlier, HSE inspector Martin Baillie said: "Employers must prevent or control risks to people's health from equipment they use at work … All work equipment must be suitable for use, regularly maintained and inspected and only used by people who have received adequate training."

The workers employers were today handed a fine of £10,500 and ordered to pay costs.

According to the HSE's PPE guide, eye protection, such as goggles, faceshields and visors, should be worn by all workers handling dangerous substances, while at the same time, not impacting on visibility and communication.
