HSE issues asbestos advice Precautions must be taken when any work capable of exposing people to asbestos fibres is carried out, businesses have been warned.

Failure to carry out such duties puts both employees and the public at risk, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said.

The advice comes after an Eastbourne man was find £36,000, plus £4,000 costs and ordered to pay a further £4,000 in compensation, for breaching seven regulations under the Control of Asbestos Regulations Act 2006.

The businessman, Robert McCart, ignored the law for financial gain, said Amanda Huff, inspector for the HSE.

"Mr McCart was aware of the dangers associated with asbestos and yet decided to risk not only his own life but also members of the public," she said.

Businesses are legally required to provide personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety helmets and safety boots, to protect workers against potential risks to their health or safety, under the PPE at Work Regulations (Amendment) Act 1992.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18806807-ADNFCR
