HSE issues forklift safety warning The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning to machinery operators across the UK, following the prosecution of a forklift truck driver who seriously injured his colleague.

The driver was fined £1,750 under the Safety at Work Act 1974, for driving the truck when his vision was obscured and striking a colleague.

Commenting on the case, HSE's investigating inspector Anne Robinson said: "The injuries inflicted could have been significantly worse, or even fatal. Operators of lift trucks must ensure that they operate them in accordance with the training they have been given to prevent such tragedies."

Ms Robinson added that workers needed to have an understanding of their legal responsibility towards others, under health and safety legislation.

There were 35 fatalities in the manufacturing industry during 2007.
