HSE issues warning to gas fitters The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reminded Britons that working with gas appliances is difficult, specialised and potentially very dangerous.

As a result, only qualified and registered engineers should attempt it.

The HSE warned that it will not hesitate to prosecute those who break the law in this way.

This threat comes after a plumber caught carrying out illegal gas work by a BBC show was jailed after ignoring a previous order to stop.

The 42-year-old man admitted breaching health and safety laws before Chelmsford Crown Court.

He ignored a prohibition notice handed to him by the HSE and continued to carry out further illegal gas work.

"It is illegal for an unregistered person to carry out work on any gas appliances," commented HSE inspector Toni Drury.

"When unregistered workers try to bypass the law in this way they are not only putting themselves at risk of prosecution and a large fine, they are also putting their customers' lives at risk."

To reduce the risk of serious accidents, Britons are advised to don appropriate workwear. ADNFCR-1200-ID-800330301-ADNFCR
