HSE sends advice to crane hire firms The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has sent a letter to all crane hire companies in the UK warning them of the potential dangers in the sector.

It made the decision following the death of a Liverpool worker who was hit by a falling machine, reports Building.co.uk.

The inspectorate's technical report was included in the correspondence, which outlined the potential reasons for the accident.

Firms were asked to "take forward certain actions" in light of the disaster, which was caused by a "massive overload" before the incident.

These "actions" include a review of equipment, systems and procedures as well as the information provided to staff and machine operators.

Companies are also urged to check with manufacturers to see if the mechanical flaw found in the Liverpool crane is one that their equipment is vulnerable to.

In addition to ensuring that machinery is safe and well maintained, employers are required by the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations 1992 to provide PPE - such as safety gloves - that is in good condition and fits.
