HSE strives to improve farming safety standards The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to use the Royal Welsh show to rally Welsh farmers into improving standards within the sector.

According to new figures from the HSE, agriculture is the most dangerous industry in Britain, with proportionately more work-related deaths than any other industry.

Some 38 workers were killed while carrying out farm work in 2009-10, in contrast to 25 fatalities the previous year.

HSE board member Sandy Blair warned: "Death and injury in farming shouldn't be accepted as 'part of the job' - that's a dangerously old-fashioned view of a modern industry.

"We all recognise how important agriculture is to the Welsh economy and environment, so it goes without saying that the safety of those farmers who dedicate their lives to it needs to be a priority."

To help reduce the number of accidents affecting the industry, agriculture workers are urged to use appropriate workwear, which may include the use of safety gloves.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19899068-ADNFCR
