HSE targets reduction in workplace accidents Figures have revealed that more than 1,000 people were badly hurt at work in Lancashire in 2009, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.

According to Mike Cross, head of the Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) in the north-west, there were more than 384 major injuries in the county, while there were a further 771 injuries that led to employees taking at least three days off work because of slips, trips or falls.

As part of the HSE's ongoing campaign designed to reduce the number of accidents in the workplace, Mr Cross wrote an open letter to workers encouraging them to ensure their personal safety.

He said: "I am writing to encourage employers and employees to think a little bit more about how they could prevent slips, trips and falls where they work."

The construction industry experiences a disproportionately high number of injuries and fatalities each year. As a consequence, the HSE implores builders to use safety gloves and safety helmets when they are working on a construction site.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19655674-ADNFCR
