HSE to conduct spot-checks in West Sussex The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned employers in West Sussex and Hampshire that they will be subject to spot checks in the following months.

It is hoped that the move will help to protect the numerous seasonal workers who are employed in the sector during this time.

David Bryant, principal inspector for the HSE, commented: "Our inspectors will be targeting premises where migrant workers are supplied by employment agencies and may be at risk."

He pointed to inadequate training in health and safety as well as a lack of understanding of their rights as areas in which firms may fall short in their treatment of seasonal employees.

Mr Bryant added that bosses had a duty of care towards all labourers to ensure that they could conduct their work in a safe environment.

Employers who need further advice on protection of workers may wish to look at the HSE website which has guidelines on the correct use of personal protective equipment such as safety helmets and hi vis clothing.
