HSE to launch safety equipment spot checks The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has announced it is to embark on a spot check campaign aimed at refurbishment sites.

Targeting specific places in the east, north-east, Scotland and the West Midlands, the safety regulator will aim to improve safety standards in the most dangerous construction sector.

According to HSE statistics, more than half of the 77 deaths in the building industry last year were caused by refurbishment accidents.

"It is totally unacceptable that so many lives have been lost and continue to be put at risk on construction sites, particularly within the refurbishment sector," said Michael Brown, spokesman for the HSE.

"Sites where health and safety is taken seriously have nothing to fear, but we will root out those that put lives at risk."

Mr Brown added that the HSE will take action against those flouting health and safety rules.

The HSE has this month drawn attention to the dangers of asbestos on its website.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18452635-ADNFCR
