HSE to promote safety issues at agriculture show

HSE to promote safety issues at agriculture show Farmers and agricultural workers are to receive safety advice from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) at this year's Great Yorkshire Show.

The workplace safety regulator is to attend the showpiece agricultural event next week in order to promote farm safety issues and warn of common occupational hazards such as falls from height, injuries from moving objects and vehicle accidents.

HSE is hoping that its presence at the event will help to tackle the number of workplace fatalities in agriculture, which stood at 26 in 2008-09, a higher rate of deaths per 100,000 workers than construction or manufacturing.

Judith Donovan, HSE's agriculture champion, said: "Though these latest figures suggest that fatal injuries to farm workers are at an all-time low there's no getting away from the fact that there is still somebody dying needlessly every two weeks."

The importance of proper safety procedures in agricultural work was underlined last month, when three farm employees were injured in an accident involving on-site all-terrain vehicles, which they had been driving without wearing safety helmets.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19253555-ADNFCR
