HSE urges companies to ensure maintenance work is carried out safely The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging employers to make sure that any maintenance work that needs doing is conducted safely with workers wearing the appropriate workwear and safety gloves.

Behind the latest warning is the fining of a company in Greenwich which failed to do this, resulting in serious burns to a worker in their factory.

The man had been called in as a contractor to help with the cleaning and maintenance of pipework in a factory.

The company was fined £40,000 after the welder sustained serious injuries and a fellow worker treated for minor injuries and shock.

Paul Hems, the HSE inspector, commented: "Multiple failings in the planning and control of the maintenance work … led to an avoidable incident taking place."

The HSE recently revealed that around 500 injuries per 100,000 workers were reported last year.
