HSE urges contractors to involve workforce

HSE urges contractors to involve workforce The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging businesses to involve employees in developing better working practices through the application of a coherent method statement (MS).

It highlights the work of a company that was brought in to install seating at the Olympic basketball arena in a short space of time.

The company used a testing period to fine tune the MS and then constantly updated it throughout the project, which were subsequently checked and agreed by workers.

The HSE says that employers have more of a responsibility to their workers than simply giving out instructions and providing essential workwear.

"Involving your workforce… means sharing information and involving the workforce in finding solutions to reduce health and safety risks," the HSE advises.

The Olympic construction project as a whole had been highly praised by the HSE and, since work began in 2005, there have been "23 periods of one million hours worked without a RIDDOR-reportable injury".
