HSE urges firms to maintain lifts The Health and Safety Executive has urged firms to ensure that they have a proper system of maintenance after a firm was fined because three workers were injured when the brakes failed on a warehouse lift.

One of the workers broke a leg and the other two sustained injuries when the elevator fell 25 metres.

The firm pleaded guilty to breaches of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and was ordered to pay over £42,000 in court costs and fines.

Richard Clarke, the HSE inspector involved in the case, stated: "This incident should serve as a lesson to all companies to ensure that they have proper maintenance regimes to avoid similar incidents in the future."

When maintenance is being carried out it may be advisable for firms to provide workers with safety signs and personal protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury.

The HSE guidelines for maintenance procedures advise firms to ensure they have clear criteria for recognition of faults and marginal performance as well as knowledge of the failure rate and the machinery's maintainability.
