HSE urges safe practices on mechanical equipment Employers have been reminded of the need to enforce safe working practices when staff use mechanical equipment.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said accidents could be prevented if firms carry out risk management plans before devices are used.

It comes after a firm was fined under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 for failing to carry out safety precautions which could have avoided a member of staff being seriously injured.

Janet Seggery, investigating inspector on behalf of the HSE, said: "If the company had simply provided the plans and had supervised the work, then this incident would never have occurred."

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are expected to ensure workers are as safe as "reasonably practicable".

This can be achieved by training employees in the correct use of equipment and providing safety equipment and clothing, such as safety gloves, safety helmets and hi vis workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18966369-ADNFCR
