HSE warn against complacency

HSE warn against complacency Despite provisional figures showing a small reduction in fatal injuries in the workplace, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is warning employers not to get complacent over safety matters.

It noted that while there was a drop to 228 fatalities between 2007/8 from 247 in 2006-7, there are still four people a week dying at work.

The HSE was also keen to point out that the numbers of agricultural workers who died in work-related injuries was up from 36 to 39.

Companies should continue to protect workers, providing them with suitable workwear, hi vis clothing, spill kits and safety helmets where appropriate.

Judith Hackitt, HSE chairperson, commented: "Whilst we welcome the headline decrease in overall numbers of fatalities, there is absolutely no room for complacency as the report suggests a plateau in the overall five-year trend."

The number of deaths in the industry peaked in 2003/4 with almost 60 workers sustaining fatal injuries that year.
