HSE warns businesses over asbestos procedure The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reminded employers of the need for proper precautions to be implemented on sites with asbestos after a local council was fined for poor practice.

HSE reminded employers of the need to keep accurate records of asbestos in buildings and to ensure that any employees working with the substance are properly certified and provided with equipment to minimise health risks.

The warning comes after Fife Council was fined £10,000 at Dunfermline Sherriff Court following an incident at an Inverkeithing flat in which asbestos insulation was unwittingly disturbed by council workers replacing water storage tanks.

Alastair Brown, an inspector for HSE, said: "Fife Council failed to keep an understandable register of asbestos and failed to ensure that a full survey for asbestos was carried out prior to any work starting."

An essential safety requirement highlighted by HSE for those working with asbestos is the strict use of appropriate workwear, such as safety gloves, safety boots and respiratory protective equipment.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19259780-ADNFCR
