HSE warns firms to properly train workers The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has urged firms to ensure that employees are properly trained in health and safety after an Ilkeston worker lost some of his thumb and index finger.

An investigation by the inspectorate found that the company had failed to adequately train the employee to use the Wadkin saw that partially amputated his digits, rendering him unable to return to work.

The firm pleaded guilty to breaching the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was ordered to pay over £7,000 in court costs and fines.

Samantha Farrar, the HSE inspector involved in the case, commented: "Employers must ensure that woodworking machine operators are properly trained and that they are made fully aware of the risks associated with such machinery."

She added that had proper training been provided, the accident could have been avoided.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations state that employers should ensure all persons who use equipment have proper training and that aside from providing personal protective equipment – such as safety gloves – they should ensure exposure to hazards are adequately controlled.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18690692-ADNFCR
