HSE warns of dangers of heavy machinery The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned firms to ensure that staff are suitably trained to use heavy machinery.

It stated that proper education for workers could help companies to avoid "life-changing" injuries to their employees.

The body noted that regular refresher courses for people who regularly use this sort of equipment is also advisable.

Businesses that fail to protect workers could find that they are in breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

This states: "Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety."

Other steps firms can take to protect workers include providing them with suitable personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety gloves and safety boots.

The PPE at Work Regulations 1992 state that all staff should be trained when and where using protective gear is required.
