HSE warns of the dangers of handling hazardous substances The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a reminder to firms that use hazardous substances to ensure that their workers follow safety procedures.

It reiterated the need for care to be taken after a firm was prosecuted for failing to ensure that its company policies were carried out sufficiently, which led to an employee sustaining serious burns.

HSE representative David Norman stated that while policies may look "robust on paper", if they are not properly followed through, preventative measures may prove to be "ineffective".

Mr Norman added that "failing to ensure that they [safety procedures] were implemented correctly" could result in severe injuries to workers.

Guidelines on the HSE website advise companies whose staff are required to work with dangerous materials to ensure that they are provided with suitable personal protective equipment.

As well as putting safety signs around potentially dangerous areas, firms should provide workers with safety gloves that fit properly.
