A collaborative project between the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and East Midlands Airport has warned of the dangers of baggage handling. The report investigated the role of new technology in reducing the risk of injury to baggage handlers and included representatives from the airport, airlines and workers.
It aimed to improve the understanding of risk in the workplace and form a new agreement on good practice, the HSE said.
Among the report's recommendations was the mechanisation of baggage handling as much as possible.
Furthermore, it advised workers not to lift bags to and from their ankle height or to and from above their shoulder height.
Collaboration between organisations and workers would improve physical safety in the workplace, the report added.
HSE head of transportation service Christine Barringer said: "It was important that we had a good spread of organisations in the group so the ideas and views of both the industry and employee representatives could be shared."
The HSE advises employers to provide appropriate training to staff on the need to use personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets, workwear and safety boots.
