Harrogate to launch health and safety drive

Harrogate to launch health and safety drive The Harrogate Safer Business Community has been formed in a scheme to improve occupational health and safety in the area.

Local police, fire and rescue services in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Harrogate borough council will be conducting inspections on three business sites in the district.

Letters have been sent to approximately 150 firms as part of the project.

As well as the inspections, companies are being offered support and advice on improving health and safety in their workplaces.

Chris Flint, leader of the HSE team on the project, commented: "Across Yorkshire and Humber ten people died from work-related activities in 2006 [to] 2007 and nearly 3,000 people suffered major injuries.

He added that these figures "make a strong argument for change" because they each represent "suffering and loss".

One way that employers can improve health and safety is to make sure that all personal protective equipment, such as safety gloves and safety helmets, are properly maintained and fit, according to HSE guidelines.
