Health and safety cutbacks 'have hidden costs'

Health and safety cutbacks 'have hidden costs' Cutting back on health and safety equipment and measures during the recession could end up costing employers in ways they may not foresee, according to a legal expert.

Robin Humphreys, associate solicitor at legal group Thursfields, has reminded businesses of the "dangerous and false economy" of scrimping on health and safety, revealing hidden long-term costs that may be incurred by those who do.

Employers who fail to provide adequate health and safety measures may find themselves liable to fines and lawsuits, as well as the additional risks of decreased productivity, sullied reputation and the closure of important premises, the solicitor warned.

Mr Humphreys also stressed the legal responsibility of businesses to promote health and safety, saying: "All occupiers of premises have a duty to ensure that premises are reasonably safe for all visitors."

Among the health and safety duties that employers must be aware of is the upholding of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations of 1992, which state that workers must be supplied with appropriate workwear for potentially dangerous jobs.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19212161-ADNFCR
