Health and safety fears prompt vehicle checks

Health and safety fears prompt vehicle checks Hundreds of vehicles will be randomly checked in the coming weeks in an attempt to ensure that loads are being safely transported.

The Health and Safety Executive's new load safety initiative has been designed to reduce the amount of injuries and deaths linked to workplace transport.

In fact, vehicle loading is responsible for 20 per cent of workplace transport accidents.

HSE statistics also found that vehicles injure more than 1,200 people a year and cost businesses millions of pounds in damaged goods.

Peter Brown of the HSE stressed the importance of safely and securely attaching a load before beginning a journey.

He added: "We hear from drivers that they were only 'going down the road' or 'they were running late', but these just won't wash - not when people's health or lives are at risk."

Personal Protective Equipment Regulations (1992) state that workers required to handle goods should wear safety boots when loading a vehicle.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19568426-ADNFCR
