Health and safety staff 'essential even in recession'

Health and safety staff 'essential even in recession' Businesses have been reminded of the vital role played by health and safety staff and warned that cutting back on safety provision could prove to be false economy.

Dennis Draper, senior environmental health consultant for business consultancy Connaught Compliance, has advised employers that recent health and safety legislation means that workplace safety measures have become more legally important than ever.

As a result of these stringent new regulations, reducing safety provision could increase the risk of incurring a major fine.

Mr Draper also cited research from the Association of Chartered Accountants which highlights the £2.5 billion loss made annually by British businesses due to workplace accidents, further underlining the economic importance of proper safety procedure and equipment.

He said: "Scrimping on health and safety now, as tempting as it might be … may be the worst business decision you make, both in terms of financial damage and reputation."

Among the safety regulations that employers must be aware of are the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations of 1992, which state that workers must be supplied with appropriate workwear for potentially dangerous jobs.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19201919-ADNFCR
