Health and safety training should be reviewed at appraisal

Health and safety training should be reviewed at appraisal All employees should be put through thorough health and safety training when they start a new job, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has advised.

Roger Bibbings, occupational safety advisor at the charity, commented: "Employees must be trained in health and safety in their workplace on induction and then again when they face new hazards, when they take on management responsibilities, or when they need to learn new skills."

He noted: "Health and safety training needs should always be reviewed at appraisal. All firms need a health and safety training strategy as part of their overall employee development plans."

Mr Bibbings' comments follow research from Aviva showing that trips and slips were behind more than a fifth of all injuries in the manufacturing sector last year.

In addition, 2.4 million working days were lost in the same industry in 2009-10 because of injuries in the workplace and ill health among staff.

Using appropriate workwear could cut down the number of accidents in a workplace.ADNFCR-1200-ID-800512403-ADNFCR
