Heavy duty PPE needed for exploded boiler investigation

Heavy duty PPE needed for exploded boiler investigation Investigators, looking into 2003 boiler explosion onboard the Bahamian cruise ship SS Norway, are being forced to use heavy duty personal protective equipment (PPE) due to concentrated levels of asbestos at the site.

The May 25th disaster, which caused the deaths of eight crewmembers and injury to 17 more, has been under investigation for several years but a conclusion has yet to be reached, according to New York's North Country gazette.

Asbestos had been used on the 50-year-old ship to insulate steam piping within the boiler room.

Poor ventilation in the room, excessive heat and damage to walkways within the room have necessitated the use of PPE such has respirators.

Even with PPE, however, the room is apparently so dangerous that investigators are only allowed to work in it for one hour at a time before having to undergo a decontamination process.

The Health & Safety Executive recommend that people who work with asbestos make sure that they double-bag all waste and dispose of it at a licensed tip.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18360466-ADNFCR
