Heavy machinery warning issued by HSE

Heavy machinery warning issued by HSE The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned companies to ensure that they protect workers from dangerous machinery.

It said that businesses need to conduct suitable risk assessments to make sure that machines are safe and that staff are not exposed to unnecessary dangers.

This is particularly important when equipment needs to be fixed or unblocked.

HSE stated that firms need to ensure that potentially dangerous parts of equipment are not accessible to workers.

Stuart Parry, HSE inspector for Derbyshire, said: "Companies should ensure that access to dangerous parts of their equipment is prevented through robust and reliable measures, and that their systems of work do not expose their employees to unacceptable levels of risk."

Between 2007 and 2008, 11 people died in the manufacturing industry as a result of contact with moving machinery.

Employers looking to ensure that staff are not at risk might wish to provide them with personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety gloves or safety boots.

Firms which fail to do this could find they are at risk of being in breach of the PPE at Work Regulations 1992.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18941566-ADNFCR
