High levels of asbestos at the Houses of Parliament

High levels of asbestos at the Houses of Parliament Medical technology news service Clinica has reported that there are still dangerous levels of asbestos in sites in the Houses of Parliament.

Despite assurances that the material found three years ago had been safely contained, Clinica's follow up investigation showed that there were still high levels in some areas.

Bernard Murphy, deputy editor of Clinica, commented: "The implications of public health failures such as this are huge."

Clinica reported that while 40 sites in Westminster were deemed safe last year, no mention was made of the remaining 160.

When removing asbestos from properties it is important for construction firms to ensure workers are well protected with proper workwear and safety gloves, as well as erecting safety signs while the work is being conducted.

Exposure to asbestos can increase the risk of asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and other cancers.
