House of Lords endorses asbestos compensation legislation The House of Lords has approved legislation that will entitle sufferers of asbestos-related mesothelioma to compensation.

Previous laws allowed those who have certain diseases caused by the toxic substance to get lump-sum payments even though their employers were no longer in business, reports the Safety and Health Practitioner.

However, it did not entitle those who had indirect exposure to asbestos, such as those whose relatives suffered from diseases, to claim compensation.

The new scheme will give financial support to approximately 600 people who were excluded and they will be eligible for an average £10,000 each.

Employers whose workers may be exposed to asbestos are advised by AI Solutions to ensure they have suitable personal protective equipment and workwear, and to erect safety signs where work is being undertaken.
