IOSH: Staff should be encouraged to exercise

IOSH: Staff should be encouraged to exercise British businesses should make an effort to encourage employees to take regular exercise and eat a healthy diet, it has been suggested.

Ray Hurst, president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), said employers should encourage a healthy attitude in order to avoid the "Jim Royle" effect - with workers becoming "lazy" and "unproductive".

"Encouraging a healthier workplace is not difficult and it can have tremendous benefits for the productivity and morale of your staff. Allowing staff to work flexible hours can also help ensure your staff remain healthy and stress-free," he commented.

IOSH is currently co-sponsoring National Men's Health week, which ends on June 16th.

According to the HSE, male employees are two-and-a-half times more likely to suffer an injury at work than their female counterparts.
