IOSH: Young workers should be supervised to make sure correct PPE used Young workers in the construction industry need to be more carefully monitored by their bosses to ensure they are following correct procedures and using the right personal protective equipment (PPE), a safety organisation has suggested.

Institution of Occupational Safety and Health president Ray Hurst believes that inexperienced builders should be given extra supervision to prevent unnecessary accidents from occurring.

"The workplace can be a dangerous place, especially for the inexperienced," he said.

"Employers and young people need to understand this and young people must be given adequate workplace training and supervision."

Mr Hurst explained 64 under-19s have been killed in the workplace during the last ten years. These fatalities have not just occurred in the construction industry either, with accidents happening in numerous sectors from warehouse work to agriculture.

The new Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act, which will enter into law later this year, could see employers serve strict jail sentences for failing to ensure that proper PPE is used.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18470113-ADNFCR
