IOSH clarify message to small businesses The president of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has written to the Financial Times to correct an article about health and safety in small businesses that appeared in the paper.

A headline of "Small businesses advised to sun health and safety experts" appeared in the publication, which Ray Hurst stated could be misleading.

He said that the advice from the Better Regulation Executive (BRE) was that small firms should consider conducting work in-house with assistance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities.

Mr Hurst noted the key thing was for companies to get the best advice possible and to ensure that experts they did employ were well qualified.

He stated that a lack of clarity about the competence of experts and the qualifications they could hold was causing problems and that it welcomed the BRE's support for its call for better government health and safety guidance.

Government advice on personal protective equipment such as safety helmets and the correct use of safety signs can be found on the HSE website.
