IOSH demands 'proactive' approach to work safety Businesses have been called upon to be "vigilant and proactive" in ensuring that workplace safety provisions are adequate for protecting the health and lives of employees.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has reminded companies of the need to think actively about workplace risks rather than simply relying on regulations, as well as ensuring that hidden health hazards are paid as much attention as visible ones.

IOSH's warning comes after a recent inquiry into an underground piping explosion which saw the failure of antiquated underground fuel pipes lead to the death of a number of people.

Richard Jones, IOSH policy and technical director, said: "Where people's lives are at stake, out of sight must never mean out of mind and those who create the risks must manage them. Hazards aren't always visible or obvious, but are real nonetheless."

Among the key measures recommended by the Health and Safety Executive to help guarantee worker safety is the provision of personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets and hi visworkwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19272696-ADNFCR
